Marilyn at Akiko's  2023

Welcome to Wailea Village, a hidden gem nestled along the lush, tropical Hamakua Coast of Hawaii's Big Island. In the late 1980s, Akiko Masuda, a third-generation Japanese woman, chose this serene location to plant her roots and has since turned it into a haven for travelers from around the world. Born in Honolulu before the advent of modern conveniences like freeways and smartphones, Akiko's life has been marked by a deep connection to tradition and the land.

This documentary photography project offers a window into Akiko's world, where the past and present blend seamlessly. Through the lens, we explore how she has woven her diverse interests—from writing children’s books to practicing tai chi, hula, and zen meditation—into the fabric of her daily life as a hostess, storyteller, and community leader. As the president of the Wailea Village Historic Preservation Community, Akiko not only preserves the history but also the spirit of this tranquil village.

The photos capture the verdant beauty of Wailea, the rustic charm of the B&B, and the intimate moments of village life, highlighting the peace and kindness that Akiko cherishes. Each frame tells a story of heritage, resilience, and a profound dedication to community—a tribute to Akiko's legacy and the timeless allure of Wailea Village.

Join us on this visual journey to discover the layers of history, culture, and personal narratives that make Wailea Village not just a place on the map, but a home to those who appreciate its quiet beauty and enduring spirit. This project not only chronicles Akiko's remarkable life and her impact on the village but also invites us to reflect on the ways our own lives are intertwined with the places we choose to love and care for.
